YOUR WEEKLY BINGE: Bad Sisters

Ahead of the premiere of season two, which drops on November 13 on Apple TV, here’s your chance to catch up on the first season of one of, if not the best, season of television from 2022: Bad Sisters.

I haven’t mentioned it until now because I just assume everyone already knows about it and loves it as much as I do, but I realize that may be a little narcissistic, so I now take the opportunity to reach those of you who have not yet discovered this true gem of a show.

Bad Sisters is a dark comedy set in Ireland about five adult sisters who were orphaned at a young age and have grown up extraordinarily bonded. Because of this bond, they are perhaps a bit more protective of each other than they should be, so much so that they feel the need to protect one of their own from an abusive husband, even if it means killing him. Well, maybe not killing him. Well, maybe it does. Or maybe it doesn’t. Well, you’ll just have to watch.

Everything about the show is brilliant, starting with the cast, spearheaded by Sharon Horgan, who also serves as writer and executive producer. All the actresses who play the sisters are great, especially Sarah Greene and Eve Hewson. Claes Bang plays the perfect villain and Brian Gleeson and Daryl McCormack play the fumbling insurance agents who are trying to sort things out. The setting is beautiful, as it is shot on location in Dublin, and just makes me want to visit that country even more.

The tone might be the hardest part of Bad Sisters for some people. At its heart, it is about domestic violence and bullying, a difficult subject, to be sure. It does not shy away from the darkness that can lurk in the human heart. But what I truly love about Bad Sisters, apart from the fact that it is my kind of dark humor that is hilarious and wickedly clever, is the fact that it is about a family that truly loves each other and will do anything to take care of each other. We are all flawed, and the Garvey family revels in its flaws, that’s what I love about this show. I just couldn’t get enough, and I can’t wait to spend more time with them when season two rolls around next month.
